The Lord’s Supper
The Lord’s Supper is also celebrated according to the Scripture. One bread without leaven is being prepared according to the number of those participating. During the prayer the bread is being blessed, then broken and shared with all. The cup contains red wine and is also blessed under prayer and all participate therein. It is for a remembrance of the suffering and death of our Lord and Redeemer Who became the sacrifice, shedding His holy Blood to pay the price for His Own, which make up the Church, His Body. «But while they were eating, Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, broke the bread, and gave it to the disciples with the words: “Take, eat! This is my body. Then He took a cup, said the prayer of thanksgiving, and gave it to them with the words: Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood, the blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins..» (Mt. 26:26-28).
By the commission of the Lord the Apostle Paul also left to us the deeper instructions about the Lord’s Supper, stating, «The cup of blessing which we bless: is it not the communion with the blood of Christ? The bread which we break: is it not the communion with the body of Christ? Because it is one single bread, in spite of our multiplicity, we are nevertheless one body, for we all share in the one bread.» (1 Cor. 10:16-17).
He continues to give some more information about this important subject: «For I, for my part, as I received it from the Lord, I have also delivered it to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, He took bread, Spoke the prayer of thanksgiving, broke the bread and said: “This is My body, for you; do this in memory of Me. In the same way He took the cup after the meal and said: “This cup is the New Covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in memory of Me! For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes.» (1 Cor. 11:23-26).
Nothing is being said that wine and bread are being changed into the literal blood and body of Christ that is to say, into the living Christ who then should be eaten. Such thought is expressed in no place in the Holy Scripture.
All Bible believers may participate in the Lord’s Supper as they believe in Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour and have received the salvation of God by grace.
